SPA Grand Prix 2 2011

SPA Grand Prix 2 was hosted by Perth Petanque on their piste at the North Inch in Perth on the 15th of May.

The fourteen teams that played in GP1, joined by another team Firing Black from Inverleith, duly turned up on a grey but not unpleasant morning.

The revised format introduced this year – leagues in the morning – 4 leagues – with the top 2 from each league playing a modified knockout of 3 rounds, to determine the GP2 winner and the top eight places, in the afternoon. The remaining seven teams also played a knockout of 3 rounds for the Plate and GP points. see Web Site for “Competition Rules and IQS Series 2011”

First round in the knockout produced convincing wins in all four games – The Bears 13-7 v Nord Ecosse, Triaxle 13-6 v Just Us, Maboule 13-5 v Champignons (revenge for 13-1 drubbing in the morning!) and Acorns 13-6 v Sex Pisteols. The Bears went on to beat Triaxle 13-9 to reach the final to meet Maboules, 13-8 winners over Acorns .

The final was a close affair but with The Bears in the lead at 11-8 Maboules conjured up a 5 to win the game and GP2

Pretty Vacant won their three games in the afternoon to claim the Plate.

Thanks to John W and Douglas H for organising the competition, Umpire Byron M for keeping an eye on the proceedings and to Perth Petanque members for their hospitality and bacon rolls.
