The Frank Malcolm Memorial Melee was held at the North Inch in Perth on 9th May.
On a most pleasant sunny spring day thirty five players – 13 from Perth, 12 from Inverleith, 7 from the Birds and Bees, and 3 from Troon – came to Perth to pay their respects to one of the ’weel kent faces’ of Scottish Petanque and compete for a unique trophy featuring one of Frank’s boules.
Frank will not only be remembered for the support he gave to both the Perth Club and Scottish Petanque but also for his skilful play, his generosity, his pauky sense of humour and tales of ‘daring do’ in the West Indies. At club nights and at competitions Frank was a walking tuck shop, dispensing drinks and biscuits to all and sundry. His curries were legendary and his rum punch (1 of strong, 2 of sweet, 3 of sour and 4 of weak) was a great ‘pick me up‘! Frank is sadly missed.
The format – a five round doubles Melee – came up with many interesting combinations of teams and results and everyone enjoyed a ‘no pressure’ competition.
The result was as follows –
1st – Brian Ward – 5 wins + 42
2nd – John Porter – 5 wins + 27
3rd – Stuart Malcolm – 5 wins + 24
The players were –
Alice, Douglas, Ed, Eileen, Elsie, Henry, Ian, Jean, Jim, Mabel, Margaret, Sheila and Stuart from Perth.
Alan, Art, Ben, Chantal, Christine T, Colin M, Colin S, Fiona, John P, John W, Mags and Mari from Inverleith.
Byron, Caroline, Christine C, John C, John W and Norma from the Birds and Bees.
Brian, Istvan and Monica from Troon.
Thanks to the above for coming to the Frank Malcolm Memorial. All proceeds from entry fees and raffle are to be donated to Cancer Research,
